One more patch:  The function Vb::get_printable_value() currently
ignores the vb's exception_status and even assumes that a value
has been allocated (and will hence crash if this is not the case).
The attached patch fixes that.  One might even consider returning
NULL if an exception is set.  However, returning SUCCESS or
INVALID would be better.
