Hello to all,

Could someone explain the concept of community please?

Consider a "sender" application that sends SNMP v1 traps to a "receiver"
application.

To send a trap, the sender creates a CommunityTarget specifying a community
string.

What is the meaning of specifying the community string?

For example, some possible meanings could be:

1) You are specifying the community of the receiver. In other words: The
sender only wants the trap to be accepted by those receivers who belongs to
the specified community. The sender can belong to any community.

2) You are specifying the community of the sender, so the receiver can
decide whether accept the traps from that sender or not. The receiver can
belong to any community.

3) You are specifying the community of the sender AND the community of the
receiver. In other words: The sender is telling its own community and
expects only the receivers from the same community to accept the trap.

4) You are specifying the community of the trap. There is no such thing like
"community of the sender" or "community of the receiver".

Thank you very much.
